What: C&O Canal Hiking and/or Bicycling Campout
When: 09/15/2023 – 09/17/2023
Where: C&O Canal National Historical Park, Great Falls MD
Adult Leader for Planning: Tom Martin
Drivers: Tom Martin (with small trailer) 3 Seats; Scott Henry (with bike trailer) 3 seats;
Departure Details: 6:00 Old Bridge UMC
Return Details: ~10:00 Old Bridge UMC,
*Note: Return time is estimated based on reasonable travel time and timeliness of departure from the event location. Scouts will be expected to stay about 30 – 45 minutes after arrival back at church to clear out trailer and stow Troop gear.
Event Details: Subject to the decisions of the Scouts/PLC, this activity may include bicycling. If we
choose that option, every participant must have a functional bicycle, a suitable cycling helmet, and a bell
or horn on the bicycle. There is plenty to do at this site/park without bicycles, including hiking the Billy
Goat Trail. To help the scouts make the decisions and plans, Mr. Martin will show photos and maps at a
troop meeting and PLC meeting in June/July 2023.
Campsite limitations: The campsite is in excellent condition, but it includes limited features, so this
event requires a minimum-essential approach to the packing list. The campsite has room for plenty of
tents on flat ground. There are picnic tables; a post for hanging a lantern; an upright charcoal grill; an in-
ground fire pit; and portable latrines. However, it is not possible for vehicles to get right up to this
campsite. There is an offloading point about ¼ mile from the campsite, and then everything must go on
foot. There are no trash receptacles in the campground: we must pack everything in and carry all trash
out. There is a water spigot about halfway between the offloading point and the campsite. There are no
showers/sinks/faucets in the campsite. We must bring water jugs, and be prepared to fill them and carry
them to the camp.
